Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Universidade L\u00fario (UniL\u00fario) and TotalEnergies EP Mozambique \u00c1rea 1 Limitada, as operator of the Mozambique LNG project, signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding to implement a project to restore coral reefs and develop sustainable fishing in Cabo Delgado province. The project has an initial duration of three years and is budgeted at US$450,000 to be disbursed by Mozambique LNG project.<\/p>\n

The project, which covers the locations of Pemba, Maringanha, Wimbe and Gimpia, aims at restoring coral reefs, improving the health of ecosystems, setting up nurseries and coral spiders, building artificial reefs and the increase of sustainable fishing techniques, as well as the promotion of ecological tourism.<\/p>\n

During the memorandum signing ceremony, Ant\u00f3nio Supeia, Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado province, stated that \u201cthis memorandum is an unequivocal sign of openness and alignment of our partners, namely TotalEnergies and UniL\u00fario, in the implementation of projects of such importance, whose objective is, certainly, to involve the private sector in the process of developing and strengthening capacities of our higher education institutions in a sustainable way. The implementation of this project means creating space for greater interaction with various stakeholders in the design and implementation of joint programs in the fields of student training, monitoring of coral reefs, training of fishers in the promotion of coral reefs, in raising community awareness of coral reef conservation and promoting tourism, including improving ecosystem health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leda Hugo, Dean of UniL\u00fario, said: \u201cI would like to express the satisfaction and honor of Universidade L\u00fario for ensuring this support from TotalEnergies through funding for UniL\u00fario to develop this project over the next three years, contributing to the rapid recovery of coral reefs in Pemba Bay for the sustainable fishing in communities and for the improvement of teaching, research and extension in these<\/p>\n

areas at our university.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his turn, Maxime Rabilloud, Managing Director of TotalEnergies, said: \u201cthe signed memorandum is evidence that TotalEnergies recognizes the important role of academia in the country\u2019s development. By supporting this project to be implemented by UniL\u00fario, we would like to contribute to the sustainable development of the country, in general, and Cabo Delgado, in particular. This is a commitment that is in line with the company\u2019s adherence to the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals, including, of course, those related to biodiversity conservation. Environmental issues are a central part of our sustainability agenda. This memorandum now signed reflects this centrality and is evidence to the support we provide, on a global scale, to activities that include raising awareness about biodiversity, training young people and research actions, as well as disseminating sustainable fishing practices or the use of forest products.\u201d<\/p>\n

It should be noted that this partnership between TotalEnergies and UniL\u00fario will allow UniL\u00fario to train around 100 students in marine sciences, with a special focus on coral reefs and their monitoring, and in diving activities, as well as train 100 people from local communities in sustainable fishing techniques and ecotourism.<\/p>\n
