Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Poor countries face economic ruin from simultaneous crises of food, energy and finance due to supply disruptions caused by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Russia is the world\u2019s top exporter of combined oil and gas, and Russia and Ukraine are both major producers of grain, together accounting for around a third of global exports. World commodity prices have hit records, hurting countries that rely on imports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe war is supercharging a three-dimensional crisis \u2013 food, energy and finance \u2013 that is pummeling some of the world\u2019s most vulnerable people, countries and economies,\u201d Guterres told reporters, releasing a report by a crisis task force he created shortly after Russia\u2019s invasion began on Feb 24.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now facing a perfect storm that threatens to devastate the economies of many developing countries,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n

Up to 1.7 billion people \u2013 a third already living in poverty \u2013 have been left \u201chighly exposed\u201d to food, energy and finance disruptions, which are triggering increases in poverty and hunger, Guterres said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most vulnerable people around the world cannot become collateral damage in yet another disaster for which they bear no responsibility,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n

He said 36 countries count on Russia and Ukraine for more than half of their wheat imports, including some of the poorest and most vulnerable in the world.<\/p>\n

The report recommended ensuring a steady flow of food and energy through open markets, and reform of the international financial system, Guterres said. Countries could use the crisis to work toward phasing out coal and other fossil fuels and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbove all, this war must end,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n
