Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The African Development Bank will disburse US$46 million (\u20ac42 million) to support communities affected by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit Mozambique in 2019.<\/p>\n

The support will benefit communities in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zamb\u00e9zia and Tete in central Mozambique, as well as Nampula and Cabo Delegado in the north of the country, said Lu\u00eds Mandlate, executive director of the Office for Reconstruction after Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, speaking to the media during a visit to Nhamatanda, in Sofala province.<\/p>\n

The amount will support 40,000 families living from agriculture until 2023, prioritising producing families that are led by women.<\/p>\n

The ambition of the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office Idai and Kenneth is to strengthen the livelihoods of families by assisting producers with irrigation kits, seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.<\/p>\n

The distribution of the material began on Wednesday in Nhamatanda at an event attended by Sofala\u2019s governor Louren\u00e7o Bulha.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our expectation, with the delivery of these kits, to improve the communities\u2019 income through an increase in production and productivity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique in March 2019, causing 603 deaths and the city of Beira, one of the country\u2019s main cities, was severely affected.<\/p>\n

Cyclone Kenneth, which hit the north of the country in April of the same year, killed 45 people.<\/p>\n

The 2018\/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in recent memory in Mozambique, killing 714 people, including 648 victims of two cyclones (Idai and Kenneth) that struck Mozambique.<\/p>\n
