Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Between 11 March and 1 April, Switzerland supported the distribution of 3,000 tools kits through IOM to the main areas affected by cyclone Gombe. The construction tool kits will help the victims to quickly (re)build shelters and damaged houses. On 11 March 2022, Cyclone Gombe hit the east coast of Mozambique, affecting several districts in the provinces of Nampula and Zambezia. The cyclone damaged key infrastructure and houses, affecting around 480,000 people.<\/p>\n

Switzerland, together with several other donors, supported IOM\u2019s initiative to coordinate the global and multi-sectoral humanitarian response. With the rainy season still ongoing, the priority is to prevent further deterioration of the living conditions of the already vulnerable population. Up to date Swiss funded toolkits prepared by IOM have so far been distributed to 726 households. A further 428 households are awaiting the allocation of plots to receive a kit and materials as the intervention is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

Anticipating the emergency and the needs: Swiss emergency response approach in Mozambique.<\/b><\/p>\n

The emergency response to cyclone Gombe is one example of Switzerland\u2019s approach to the complex humanitarian situation in Northern Mozambique. As the zone is affected by conflict and natural disasters, it is essential to anticipate possible shocks and pre-position stocks for a swift response. Switzerland has therefore financed IOM to purchase, prepare and stock 5000 toolkits.<\/p>\n
