Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Council of the European Union (EU) decided on Thursday to reinforce the assistance given to the Mozambican armed forces under the European Peace Facility, aiming at making them \u201coperational and self-sufficient\u201d for a total amount of \u20ac89 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Council adopted today a decision amending the assistance measure for support to the Mozambican Armed Forces under the European Peace Facility (EPF) adopted in November 2021, adding a further amount of \u20ac45 million, the structure that brings together EU member states announced in a statement.<\/p>\n

According to the EU Council, \u201cthis additional support brings overall EPF support for Mozambique to \u20ac89 million in total\u201d.<\/p>\n

The assistance measure aims to strengthen EU support for capacity building and the deployment of the units of the Mozambican Armed Forces trained by the EU Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM Mozambique)\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis support consists of the provision of integrated packages of equipment and supplies in conjunction with EU training missions.,\u201d adds the announcement. Specifically, \u201cthe aim is to ensure that the training is as efficient and effective as possible, enabling EUTM-trained troops to be fully operational and self-sufficient upon deployment,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n

Through this assistance measure, the EU \u201cwill finance equipment to benefit the eleven Mozambican companies to be trained by the EUTM, including individual and collective equipment, ground mobility assets, as well as a field hospital,\u201d adds the EU Council.<\/p>\n

Last October, the Council of the EU approved the launch of the EUTM to ensure a more efficient and effective response by the Mozambican armed forces to the crisis in Cabo Delgado province by providing them with training and capacity building.<\/p>\n

In November, the Council adopted a measure assisting with \u20ac44 million to Mozambique in support of the Mozambican military units trained by the EU training mission in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance all Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) actions in military and defence areas, with the aim of preventing conflict, preserving peace and strengthening international security and stability. In particular, the European Peace Facility allows the EU to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third states and regional and international organisations as regards military and defence matters..<\/p>\n

The first EU military mission in Mozambique, dedicated to training troops to face the armed insurgency in Cabo Delgado, started on 3 November with an official ceremony at the Katembe Independent Fusiliers Company, Maputo.<\/p>\n

The two-year mission, which is expected to have 140 training troops, comes in response to the Mozambican government\u2019s request for help in preparing its troops.<\/p>\n

The northern province of Cabo Delgado has been the target of armed attacks, which have led to the suspension of key gas projects for the country.<\/p>\n

The region faces a humanitarian crisis with 817,000 displaced people, according to government figures, in a conflict with 3,100 dead according to the ACLED conflict registration project.<\/p>\n

The mission will not involve military operations but will deploy around 140 military divided between two training centres, one for commandos in Campo Militar do Dongo (Chimoio, in the centre of the country) and another for marines in Katembe, opposite the capital in Maputo bay.<\/p>\n
