Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Eight companies and international consortia have expressed interest in establishing a strategic partnership with the Mozambican government in building a hydroelectric dam at Mphanda Nkuwa, on the Zambezi river, about 60 kilometres downstream from the existing dam at Cahora Bassa.<\/p>\n

The bidders are:<\/p>\n

Power China and Longyuan Power (Chinese);<\/p>\n

Sumitomo and Kansai (Japan);<\/p>\n

Scatec (Norway);<\/p>\n

EDF (Fran\u00e7a);<\/p>\n

A consortium of companies from Mauritius and Zambia, headed by ETC Holdings Mauritius);<\/p>\n

And a consortium from Italy and Zimbabwe, led by the Webuild Group of Italy.<\/p>\n

A press release from the Mphanda Nkuwa Implementation Office said that these companies and consortia had replied to the tender launched last December, and delivered their pre-qualification documents before the deadline (last Monday).<\/p>\n

Initially, the deadline for submitting the documents was 28 February but, at the request of several of the bidders, it was extended to 18 April.<\/p>\n

The agreement on implementing the Mphanda Nkuwa projct will be signed between the Mozambican public electricity company, EDM, the operator of the Cahora Bassa Dam, HCB, and the strategic partner selected.<\/p>\n

It is hoped that construction of the new dam (which has been on the drawing boad for decades) will finally begin in 2024. Construction will last for at least seven years, with an investment estimated at about five billion US dollars. The dam will generate 1,500 megawatts of electricity.<\/p>\n
