Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Payment of the 7,500 meticais Cyclone Idai compensation in Sofala province was resumed about a week ago. This is the second tranche, the first having been paid at the end of last year.<\/p>\n

The subsidy is intended to support the most needy of those who fell victim to Cyclone Idai, which devastated the central region of the country in March, 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust over 54,000 households will benefit from this subsidy,\u201d explained Abudul Razak, delegate of the National Institute of Social Action in Sofala. \u201cAs you may have seen, in the first phase, 7,500 meticais [was paid to each family], and in this one, we are paying the same amount, totalling 15,000 meticais for each family. Beneficiaries who for some reason were unable to receive the first tranche, will receive both tranches at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

The beneficiaries reside in the districts of B\u00fazi, Gorongosa, Muanza, Nhamatanda and Beira. The process ended without a hitch in the first four districts last Tuesday, and will start this Thursday in the city of Beira, where, last year, there was turmoil when countless people invaded the subsidy payment points, demanding pay-outs without even being registered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis time, we aim to involve all entities in the province and disseminate information about who is effectively entitled to receive the subsidy. We have faith that we are now better organised. However, we are again calling for only the beneficiaries to come to the payment posts. We are in a critical period for Covid-19, so we all have to collaborate to avoid gatherings,\u201d Razak urged.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that the process has nothing to do with the payment of Covid-19 subsidies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll those people registered by the government in the scope of Covid-19 mitigation must remain calm, because as soon as we finish paying the Idai subsidies, we will start the registration and biometric enrolment of beneficiaries and, in due course, we will announce the dates for the payment of amounts,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n
