Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique and India expressed on Wednesday their intention to strengthen cooperation in the security and defense areas in order to eradicate the terrorism that has been plaguing the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.<\/p>\n

The intention was expressed by Defence Minister Crist\u00f3v\u00e3o Chume, minutes after an audience granted to the Deputy Public Security Adviser of India, Vikram Misri, who is on a working visit to the country.<\/p>\n

According to Chume, both parties evaluated the possibility of establishing cooperation in the fight against terrorism \u201cand as you know, we have our partners with forces on the ground. We also have others who are not on the ground but are providing additional support, for example the European Union and the United States of America. So, India wants to know how it can contribute to strengthen the fight against terrorism. In the coming days, we will give additional information.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his part, Misri explained that his visit to Mozambique is part of the Indian government\u2019s efforts to support the maintenance of peace in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique is an important partner for us. Therefore, we will focus on several areas to support, improving the provision of equipment, and capacity building of the defense and security forces in sharing information, which is relevant in the fight against terrorism\u201d, said Misri.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has been cooperating with India in the naval area. As part of the partnership between the two countries, the Indian government offered, in December 2021, two patrol boats that are being used to guard the coast against terrorists.<\/p>\n

Besides the military area, Mozambique and India cooperate in the political, diplomatic, economic, social and educational areas.<\/p>\n

Chume told reporters that in Cabo Delgado, \u201cthe situation remains under control, and day by day the situation is evolving positively. What I can say at this moment is that we are in a better situation than in previous months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chume stressed that the areas previously occupied by terrorists are now free and recovering step by step.<\/p>\n
