{"id":19188,"date":"2022-05-10T14:36:39","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T14:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/pfa-launches-new-consultation-on-brain-injuries"},"modified":"2022-05-10T14:47:06","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T14:47:06","slug":"pfa-launches-new-consultation-on-brain-injuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/pfa-launches-new-consultation-on-brain-injuries","title":{"rendered":"PFA launches new consultation on brain injuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Former footballers concerned about neurodegenerative diseases are being asked to come forward by the Professional Footballers\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n<p>It is seeking more evidence of a link between heading and brain injuries, and intends to improve support for players.<\/p>\n<p>Both diagnosed and undiagnosed ex-players will be surveyed as the PFA pushes for a care fund.<\/p>\n<p>It is also hoped brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) will be classed as an industrial disease.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Astle, daughter of former West Brom and England international Jeff Astle, who died with CTE in 2002, said families caring for loved ones need \u201csubstantial and long-term support\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Astle is the PFA\u2019s neurodegenerative diseases project lead and hopes the new consultation will \u201cencourage more former players to come forward and help further demonstrate the sheer scale of the issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence from the survey \u2014 which will ask respondents if they are worried about memory and brain function &#8211; will be provided to the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC), which could recommend that those affected receive benefits from the government.<\/p>\n<p>Astle said of the IIAC: \u201cAfter nearly two decades, they now need to recognise CTE as an industrial disease. The evidence is clear and it can\u2019t be ignored any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results of the consultation will also be used in ongoing discussions with leaders from across English football as the PFA seeks financial support for ex-players and their families.<\/p>\n<p>A 2019 study found that former professional footballers are three and a half times more likely to die of dementia than the general population.<\/p>\n<p>New guidelines issued last July said professional footballers in England are to be limited to 10 \u201chigher force headers\u201d a week in training from the 2021-22 season.<\/p>\n<p>In August, new research showed defenders are more likely to have dementia in later life compared with other playing positions in football.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a dedicated care department for former players living with neurodegenerative disease (NDD) was set up by the Professional Footballers\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique.
