{"id":19483,"date":"2022-05-14T16:20:12","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T16:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/nyusi-challenges-universities-to-strengthen-knowledge-production"},"modified":"2022-05-14T16:27:58","modified_gmt":"2022-05-14T16:27:58","slug":"nyusi-challenges-universities-to-strengthen-knowledge-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/nyusi-challenges-universities-to-strengthen-knowledge-production","title":{"rendered":"Nyusi challenges universities to strengthen knowledge production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has challenged the publicly owned Eduardo Mondlane and Lurio Universities (UEM and UNIL\u00fario) to strengthen their capacity to produce knowledge based on scientific research, in order to meet the current challenges faced by the country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Wednesday, during the induction of Manuel Guilherme J\u00fanior as the Vice-Chancellor of the UEM and Marcelino Liphola and Fred Nelson as the Deputy Vice-Chancellors of UniL\u00fario, the president also challenged both institutions to improve their position in the ranking of the major universities in the world, without turning them into mere distributers of diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key role of our university is to produce, transmit and disseminate knowledge\u201d, said Nyusi. \u201cAs in other countries, our greatest struggle is characterized by expansion, greater access and increasing the quality of education to meet society\u2019s demands. Therefore, our higher education institutions should not become places of mere distribution of sheets of paper, called diplomas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the president, Guilherme Junior, as the new Vice-Chancellor of the UEM, the oldest institution of higher education in the country, has to work continuously taking into account that UEM is the \u201cmother university\u201d in Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p>Nyusi stressed the need to create a cordial atmosphere of working relations, warning that \u201cI do not want to receive audiences to manage conflicts or disagreements, I have too much else to do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Vice-Chancellors, he said, must reduce regional asymmetries in terms of access to higher education, bringing higher education closer to Mozambicans who live and work far from the major cities.<\/p>\n<p>He also wanted them \u201cto stimulate university research and extension activities, ensuring the modernization of the administrative-financial system, as well as making possible smart partnerships inside and outside the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique.
