Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>One hundred and forty-four vehicles circulating illegally in Mozambique were seized between Friday and Monday in an operation initiated by the Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT).<\/p>\n

The high-capacity luxury cars valued at more than 52 million meticais were being used on the roads with either false or foreign registration plates, and their owners had failed to pay the necessary customs duties.<\/p>\n

According to AT spokesman Fernando Tinga, the state expects to levy more than 27 million meticais in customs duties and other fees, in addition to fines.<\/p>\n

Of the total number of cars seized, 97 were circulating in the south of the country, 32 in the north and the remaining 15 in the centre, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe numbers show the seriousness of the situation, taking into account that this was an operation spanning less than one week,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n

Some vehicles even bore counterfeit diplomatic registration plates originating in the black market.<\/p>\n

The AT spokesperson said foreigners wanting to drive their own vehicles in Mozambique should approach the authorities for a temporary import license.<\/p>\n

But, \u201cthis option is reserved for people of other nationalities only, so we are in fact facing a tax evasion matter, given that the owners of these cars are Mozambican\u201d, Tinga observed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
