Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique has acquired portable devices for the rapid verification of the authenticity and quality of medicines being imported into the country, health authorities announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis portable device offers simple, quick and economical screening and can identify low-quality and counterfeit medicines circulating in the national market,\u201d said T\u00e2nia Sitoe, president of the Mozambican Medicines Regulatory Authority.<\/p>\n

The five devices are valued at US$150,000 (\u20ac144,000), and the government expects to receive three more by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

According to recent data, about 5% of the medicines that enter Mozambique are counterfeit or of low quality, a problem that the Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, considers \u201ccan only be tackled through the involvement of everyone, from manufacturers, regulatory authorities, police, healthcare professionals, customs, magistrates and consumers\u201d.<\/p>\n

The electronic devices provide medicine test results within seconds, the authorities say, adding that their maintenance is free of charge for Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe manufacturer can access the system and carry out maintenance remotely \u2013 there is no cost to the country,\u201d Sitoe stressed.<\/p>\n

According to health authorities, antibiotics, sexual stimulants and drugs used to treat Covid-19 are among the products most likely to be counterfeit in Mozambique.<\/p>\n
