Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A former Renamo guerrilla base in Cuamba district, Niassa province, has been deactivated, and 281 fighters demobilised as part of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process, the United Nations Secretary-General\u2019s personal envoy for Mozambique has announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first base to be closed in 2022 and the 12th in total since June, 2020. Preparations for the closure of this base were particularly challenging, largely due to adverse weather conditions that made access to the base difficult,\u201d Mirko Manzoni said in a note.<\/p>\n

The UN Secretary-General\u2019s personal envoy for Mozambique praised the \u201cpatience\u201d of the guerrillas at the base, who \u201cwaited eagerly for demobilisation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Progress in DDR<\/b><\/p>\n

Mirko Manzoni also praised the commitment of the Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of Renamo, in the progress that the DDR has been making.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the country continues its journey towards the realisation of a definitive peace, the United Nations remains committed to supporting the people of Mozambique on the path of national reconciliation,\u201d the press release reads.<\/p>\n

The DDR is a corollary of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed on August 6, 2019, by Filipe Nyusi and Ossufo Momade, to end another cycle of armed violence between the government of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) and Renamo.<\/p>\n

As part of the understanding mentioned, 63% of the estimated 5,000 Renamo guerrillas have surrendered their weapons and, of the political force\u2019s 16 bases, 11 have been deactivated.<\/p>\n

The agreement is the third between the Frelimo government and Renamo, all signed after cycles of armed violence, mainly in the centre of the country.<\/p>\n
