Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>A doctor, whose identity was not revealed, has died of Covid-19 in the city of Beira, Secretary of State of Sofala Stela Pinto Zeca told press at an update on the evolution of the epidemic in the province.<\/p>\n

The secretary of state said that the doctor was suffering from a prior illness when she started exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms, leading to her hospitalisation.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Stela Zeca said, 205 health professionals had been infected in the province, of which 187 had recovered, 27 were still active cases and two had died, the first in February this year.<\/p>\n

The secretary of state expressed concern about the high rate of positivity in the region, saying that levels had sky rocketed in the past week. Between May and December of last year, there had been four hospital admissions and one death, while this year, 30 deaths and 172 admissions have been registered already.<\/p>\n

The city of Beira has the most cases: 448 so far, Stela Zeca detailed.<\/p>\n

Infection was mainly affecting young people between 20 and 39 years of age, she noted, whereas previously the elderly had predominated.<\/p>\n

Of the ongoing investigation work, she said, there is still no confirmation of Delta variant presence in Sofala, but the flow of people from Tete (where the Delta variant has been confirmed) to Beira and vice versa is large, prompting redoubled caution.<\/p>\n

Stela Zeca called for increased awareness and for people to continue to adhere to prevention measures and the immunisation of priority groups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
