Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A large number of mosquito nets have disappeared, apparently stolen, from the health and social welfare warehouses in Vanduzi district, in the central Mozambican province of Manica.<\/p>\n

These are insecticide-treated mosquito nets for free distribution under the government\u2019s anti-malaria programme. The main beneficiaries of the mosquito nets should be pregnant women who receive them during ante-natal consultations.<\/p>\n

The Vanduzi district administrator, Joao Amade, confirmed the disappearance of the nets and said investigations are under way to discover who is responsible for the theft.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur suspicions fall on some of the staff working in the health sector\u201d, Amade told AIM. \u201cBut we\u2019re letting the bodies of the administration of justice work\u201d.<\/p>\n

Amade did not say how many nets had been stolen, only that the number was large. \u201cWe know that this material comes from the government and from some partners who are working in the fight against malaria, and it is intended for the public\u201d, he added. \u201cThe theft concerns us greatly, because these are public goods\u201d.<\/p>\n

Amade said he believes that the current investigation will bring results, \u201cand in due time we will know who are the people involved in this crime\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot allow a public servant to take advantage, for personal purposes, of that which the State entrusted to him\u201d, Amade insisted. \u201cThe people involved will be taken to court\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vanduzi district has two administrative posts, divided into five localities, covered by nine health units.<\/p>\n
