Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, yesterday encouraged social organisations to get involved in the identification of issues that constitute an obstacle to electoral processes and the search for solutions to them.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the swearing-in of new National Election Commission (CNE) member M\u00e1rio Augusto, Nyusi said the government would continue with efforts to improve the working conditions of the CNE and other electoral bodies, so that they can carry out their noble and delicate mission efficiently and effectively.<\/p>\n

The head of state urged M\u00e1rio Augusto to focus on tasks of extreme importance in this first phase of the 2022-2025 election cycle, with the emphasis on the installation of bodies to support the National Elections Commission, voter registration in districts with municipalities and supervision of the tasks legally assigned to the Commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the incumbent to deploy his knowledge and creativity rto strengthening the CNE\u2019s capacity to guarantee credible, fair and transparent elections,\u201d Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

For that to happen, Filipe Nyusi said that the inductee must be guided by the culture of teamwork, defending the vision and foundational values of the CNE, based on independence, impartiality, professionalism and strict obedience to the Constitution and the law.<\/p>\n

The president stressed that the CNE is an independent state body of all powers, impartial and responsible for the supervision of voter registration and electoral acts, in scrupulous compliance with the Constitution of the Republic.<\/p>\n

In the exercise of their functions, he continued, CNE members do not represent public or private institutions, political or social organisations of their origin, but above all, they defend the national interest, obeying the dictates of the law and their conscience.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1rio Augusto fills the vacancy created by the death in April this year of then CNE member Ab\u00edlio da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o Guilherme Diruai, who was the coordinator of the Commission for Electoral Organisation and Operations.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic paid tribute to the deceased, calling him \u201can example of patriotism, having performed his duties with zeal, dedication, professionalism, patriotic spirit and a sense of mission\u201d.<\/p>\n

The deputy police commissioner in the reserve is since yesterday part of the 17-member college that took office in January 2021 for a six-year term.<\/p>\n

Talking to the press after being sworn in, M\u00e1rio Augusto said he was no stranger to the CNE, as he had always had links with the country\u2019s electoral machinery, not in the highest body, but in the executive bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it will be difficult to make my contribution, because I know the phases of the electoral calendar,\u201d Augusto said.<\/p>\n

Also on Thursday (19-05), President Nyusi received in audience a delegation from the American religious congregation, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [often commonly known as the Mormon church]. The delegation announced that their leadership was preparing to build a majestic infrastructure in the country and support social groups in vulnerable situations, especially children.<\/p>\n
