Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>President Filipe Nyusi highlighted in Namuno, Cabo Delgado, yesterday the contribution of the Catholic Church in Mozambique, particularly in the areas of education and health.<\/p>\n

The head of state cited by way of example the church\u2019s role in furnishing thousands of Mozambicans the opportunity to learn how to read and write, in addition to training in art and craft schools.<\/p>\n

Nyusi was speaking at the event that marked the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Santa Maria M\u00e3e de Deus de Namuno Mission, the first in Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

According to the Mozambican head of state, in today\u2019s world, where social injustice still exists, the Catholic Church and its faithful help to spread the word of hope among those lost and living in despair and abandonment.<\/p>\n

For President Nyusi, the Parish of Santa Maria de Namuno has, since its creation on 22 May, 1922, been the centre of local life, creating a social dynamic through the construction of a school, a hospital and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n

He said that the work carried out there reflected the Catholic Church\u2019s mission of solidarity with the impoverished, the excluded and those whose right to life was threatened.<\/p>\n

He welcomed the humanitarian support and moral and spiritual assistance to victims of terrorist attacks affecting some parts of Cabo Delgado province, reflecting that the people living in those areas needed schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need someone to look at them with eyes of hope, so that they too can believe in the future with hope,\u201d Nyusi said, highlighting that every Mozambican had a role to play in the construction of effective peace, national reconciliation.<\/p>\n

The president further promised that the government would remain open to working with religious denominations, with a view to strengthening their role in society.<\/p>\n

Fr. Suman Anthony Paul, secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Mozambique and the Vatican representative at the event, highlighted in his message the Catholic Church\u2019s commitment to building a more fraternal society committed to sharing its spiritual and material goods and taking care of those most in need.<\/p>\n

He said that the presence of the President of the Republic at the ceremony confirmed and strengthened the relationship of mutual cooperation, through humanitarian aid and structural support for development, for the common good, especially of the underprivileged, between the Church, the Holy See and the Mozambican government.<\/p>\n
