{"id":20150,"date":"2022-05-26T15:53:14","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T15:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/pemba-more-than-100-motorcycles-seized-reports"},"modified":"2022-05-26T16:00:33","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T16:00:33","slug":"pemba-more-than-100-motorcycles-seized-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/pemba-more-than-100-motorcycles-seized-reports","title":{"rendered":"Pemba: More than 100 motorcycles seized \u2013 reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Joint teams of the Police of the Republic, Municipal Police and of the National Institute of Road Transport (INATRO) detained 100 motorcyclists and seized their respective motorbikes from Tuesday to Wednesday, in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado, on the grounds of lacking a driving license, not wearing a helmet, or transporting an excessive number of people.<\/p>\n<p>The operation is intended to regularise motorcycle taxi activity in the city, currently carried out in a state of anarchy, Pemba Mayor Florete Simba told the press this Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens is that anyone who buys a motorcycle takes to the public road and operates as a motorcycle taxi, without a driving licence or any notion of the highway code, among other factors that contribute to traffic accidents,\u201d Simba explained.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics indicate 25 accidents involving motorcyclists in the first quarter of the current year, against 50 in the same period in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Municipality intends to change this situation by creating a data base of those who operate under the following rules: basic instruction on the highway code, a driving licence, two helmets for each transporter [ per motortaxi ] and that only one passenger at a time is transported. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the traffic police and the INATRO.
