Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday admitted that people displaced by terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado are trying to return to their home districts, despite the continuing threat of terrorist attack.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a conference in Maputo marking the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Ombudsman\u2019s office, Nyusi said the displaced people had decided for themselves to try to go home, although there was no formal authorization for them to do so.<\/p>\n

The victims of terror, he added, said they needed no authorization to go home, just as they had not waited for authorization to flee from the terrorists in the first place. \u201cThe responsibility of my government is to keep these places safe\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n

Cited in Friday\u2019s issue of the independent daily \u201cO Pais\u201d, he said the government was well aware that it should not boast of victory over terrorism. \u201cTo say that things have improved is not the same as saying that terrorism is over\u201d, Nyusi continued.<\/p>\n

Over the past week there have been new attacks, including beheadings, in areas once thought free of terrorists. \u201cNobody is proclaiming victory\u201d, said Nyusi. \u201cBut we do say that our struggle is bringing encouraging results\u201d.<\/p>\n

The President said he is aware of possible violations of the human rights of displaced people, and he urged the Ombusdman, Isaque Chande, to follow up the matter. \u201cYour services may be requested to assist the victims of this evil\u201d, he added. \u201cSo you need to study new ways about how the Ombudsman\u2019s office can make a contribution towards mitigating the violation of the rights of those affected\u201d.<\/p>\n
