Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican government advocates a joint effort for the success of the recently created African Humanitarian Agency, whose mission is to mobilize resources to respond to the recurring humanitarian crises on the continent.<\/p>\n

The new agency was created at an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on Humanitarian Affairs, held on Friday in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, in which Mozambique participated with a delegation headed by the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, representing President Filipe Nyusi.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of us, countries and cooperation partners, must join efforts so that the African Humanitarian Agency can fully carry out its mission,\u201d Maleiane said in his brief speech at the summit, explaining that the agency will assist Mozambique, as it faces such disasters as tropical storms, cyclones and floods.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese weather events pose a great challenge to our country\u2019s socio-economic development, considering that they cause huge destructions of public and private infrastructure, leading our government to seek additional resources for their reconstruction or replacement\u201d, he said, adding that extreme events take human lives and cause humanitarian emergencies, requiring the provision of shelter and food for internally displaced people.<\/p>\n

There is a close link between natural disasters and many of the humanitarian crises that have occurred on the continent. Hence, Mozambique, stated the Prime Minister, considers it important to adopt an integrated approach to human security in order to provide adequate humanitarian assistance to displaced and\/or refugee populations, as well as to guarantee the reconstruction of destroyed infrastructures, while ensuring the continuous development of African countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must continue to adopt resilience and climate change adaptation measures, with greater participation and intervention by the African Humanitarian Agency that we have created\u201d, said Maleiane.<\/p>\n

\u201cClimate adaptation needs a great deal of financial resources and the African continent alone will not be able to generate this without the support of our partners\u201d.<\/p>\n

For his part, the Senegalese President and current chairperson of the African Union, Macky Sall, cited the United Nations \u201cGlobal Humanitarian Overview 2021\u201d, which says the most significant and urgent crises with alarming humanitarian consequences are in Africa, with more than 30 million internally displaced persons, refugees, and asylum seekers.<\/p>\n

Sall concluded his speech by drawing attention to the uncertain future of millions of refugees and internally displaced persons. He called for \u201cinclusive development\u201d, observing the principles of social justice, so that every citizen feels heir to their country\u2019s national resources.<\/p>\n

The event was marked by the contribution of several countries, particularly Angola and South Africa, which each individually contributed 10 million US dollars to the new Agency. Nigeria pledged three million dollars.<\/p>\n
