Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi yesterday praised Russia for understanding Mozambique\u2019s position of neutrality in relation to the military conflict in Ukraine, reiterating the option for resolving differences through dialogue.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi made this statement during his meeting on Tuesday with the Chairperson of the Russian Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, who is visiting the country.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the head of state stated that Mozambique\u2019s position, which springs from the Constitution of the Republic, is to find a solution to conflict through dialogue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe commend and are grateful for the fact that Russia understands our position and we express our willingness, albeit simple, to help identify peaceful solutions to this dispute,\u201d Nyusi said, adding that this position also expresses a feeling of solidarity with peace.<\/p>\n

He regretted the fact that the conflict was lengthening and having catastrophic consequences, not only for Europe, but also for the rest of the world, with the rise in product prices.<\/p>\n

In another context, the Mozambican head of state expressed satisfaction with the openness that Russia is showing to expand bilateral cooperation with Mozambique, in the economic and social sectors.<\/p>\n

Valentina Matvienko said that her country welcomes Mozambique\u2019s neutral stance in relation to the conflict with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

She added that Russia had always done everything possible to resolve this difference diplomatically and peacefully, but a number of factors had driven the situation to its current stage. Despite this, she added, Russia remained open to peaceful dialogue.<\/p>\n

Valentina Matvienko also referred to the need to increase trade between Russia and Mozambique, which in the past year amounted to around US$109 million, well below its potential.<\/p>\n

Matvienko invited the Mozambican government to identify priority areas in which cooperation could be expanded, so that these priorities could be discussed at a bilateral summit to be held in July in Moscow, the Russian capital, if Mozambique so agrees.<\/p>\n
