This has happened due to turbocharger failure and the Indian agencies are now scrambling to fix the problems so that the locomotives can resume operations in the African country, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Turbocharger is a device used to generate more horsepower from the locomotive\u2019s diesel engine and this is also known as the prime mover. The turbochargers were manufactured by Indian players and the locomotives, customised to meet the specific requirement, were manufactured at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) at Varanasi, which is now known as Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW). Four locomotives were flagged off in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>An official said out of the five locomotives, which are in Mozambique, two are operational and another one will be commissioned in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince these locomotives were developed and manufactured to meet the specific requirement of countries like Mozambique and Zimbabwe, there have been some issues. Most of the items used were customised. The lessons learnt from this will help us to do better in future,\u201d said the official.<\/p>\n<p>The railway PSU, RITES Ltd, which has exported the locomotives, is now trying to replace the turbo chargers that have developed faults from domestic manufacturers and from overseas players as well. \u201cThese items are under warranty. So, the Indian player, which had supplied them, will bring the replacement. But that may take a long time and the government in Mozambique is concerned, so we will get fresh supplies. The new replacements by the Indian manufacturer can be kept as spare for future requirements,\u201d said an official.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the railways had said the Cape Gauge Diesel Locomotives had been designed, manufactured and financed by India for export. The BLW had also claimed that after Mozambique, it was attempting to expand its export growth to Africa where an extensive cape gauge network was being developed.
