Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>With two price hikes already this year, street vendor In\u00eas Sitoe has to spend twice as much time on Maputo\u2019s sidewalks to sell all the bread she carries in the plastic boxes on her head.<\/p>\n

She says customers have abandoned her for manioc, \u201cwhich comes out cheaper\u201d at \u2018matabicho\u2019 time \u2013 the name given to breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has been no movement since the price went up,\u201d In\u00eas told Lusa.<\/p>\n

Ines is a \u2018mag\u00faeva\u2019, a Changan word that designates someone who buys bread wholesale from bakeries and resells it on the streets, something she\u2019s been doing for 15 years, when each small loaf cost five meticais (\u20ac0.07).<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the year, before the two adjustments, In\u00eas would have sold all her 350 loaves \u2013 a kind of small baguette \u2013 by 9:00 a.m., but now it takes her to the middle of the afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers don\u2019t buy yesterday\u2019s bread,\u201d she says, so she has to stay on the street until 4:00 p.m. to clear her stock. \u201cAs long as the bread doesn\u2019t run out, I won\u2019t leave the street.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00eas once bought loves wholesale for eight meticais (\u20ac0.12), but this year it reached 10 meticais (\u20ac0.14 euros), forcing her to resell for 12 meticais (\u20ac0.17) instead of 10 meticais, as before.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how she maintains her profit margin of two meticais (\u20ac0.03) per loaf, but it creates problems in the monthly budget of those who live in one of the poorest countries, where every penny gains enormous importance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of breakages \u2013 there\u2019s no way to manage the household bills this way,\u201d she complains, adding that she\u2019s reduced the amount of loaves she buys from 350 to 200.<\/p>\n

Still, it takes \u201ca long time\u201d for the bread to sell out.<\/p>\n

Bakeries justify the rise in bread price with the increase in the price of wheat, whose import has become more difficult and expensive due to the war in Ukraine. They, too, are experiencing a reduction in customer numbers.<\/p>\n

In fact, according to Celeste Mabjaia, housewife and manager of the Costa Tembe bakery in Maputo for 28 years, a further increase of 200 meticais (\u20ac3.00) in the price of a bag of wheat is expected, up from the current 2,260 meticais (\u20ac33.00) to 2,460 meticais (\u20ac36.00).<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are difficult times,\u201d Celeste complains, adding that, in some of the five Costa Tembe bakeries scattered across Maputo, the number of bags of wheat used per day has halved because \u201ccustomers are decreasing\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018mag\u00faevas\u2019 have also reduced the amount of bread they take,\u201d she says, and even at the counter \u201cpeople who bought five to six loaves, now buy three or four, and this creates knock-on effects in the business.\u201d<\/p>\n

To try to compensate customers, Arnaldo Lucas, manager of a bakery on the outskirts of Maputo, used another strategy \u2013 increasing the weight of a loaf from 145 to 160 grams.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t increase the weight, customers fall off,\u201d says Arnaldo, who has worked at the FLN bakery since 2010.<\/p>\n

Arnaldo foresees a third increase in bread after a likely rise in wheat prices expected on the 15th of this month. \u201cIt\u2019s not certain, it\u2019s still under debate\u201d, he cautions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think customers will welcome another hike, because money is tight,\u201d Deolinda Armindo, a worker at the P\u00e3o da Terra bakery, says between serving customers.<\/p>\n

Customer Fina Boavida says she understands the reason for the price hikes \u2013 after all, \u201ceverything has gone up in Mozambique, from wheat to fuel\u201d. \u201cEven if it reaches 15 meticais (\u20ac0.21) we will still buy bread,\u201d she says \u2013 there\u2019s no way of avoiding it.<\/p>\n

In addition to cassava and sweet potatoes, Mozambican families also used to replace bread with saut\u00e9ed rice, but \u201cthe price of oil has also been rising\u201d, which makes the situation \u201csuffocating\u201d.<\/p>\n

Thinking about prices these days \u201cis a martyrdom that every housewife feels\u201d, Celeste Mabjaia laments.<\/p>\n
