Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) has suggested Mozambicans replace bread with local agricultural products such as cassava and sweet potato.<\/p>\n

Minister Silvino Moreno\u2019s recommendation is based on the observation that there are areas of the country where the consumption of bread is not usual, since there is cassava, sweet potato and other locally produced agricultural products in abundance there.<\/p>\n

Speaking yesterday in Maputo as part of a seminar on the National Industrialise Mozambique Programme (PRONAI), the minister said this was a good time to encourage people to consume locally produced goods.<\/p>\n

According to Moreno, the government has been monitoring the wheat crisis in the international market resulting mainly from the Ukraine-Russia conflict, whose consequences are also being felt in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil last month there was stock of wheat, mainly for the production of bread, but we believe that, in the coming period, what stock we still have will run out. Additional quantities will be obtained, but at new, higher prices, because of this crisis,\u201d Moreno commented.<\/p>\n

There is no escape from this reality, and Mozambique must seek alternatives to bread consumption, he says. \u201cRight now, there is mainly normal bread production across the country, but we have to look for solutions in case the price of wheat becomes unsustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month the Mozambican Bakers Association (AMOPAO) warned of a possible rise in the price of bread on the national market due to increasing production costs, especially of wheat, resulting from the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n

The fact that most of the countries that supply wheat have also closed their markets because of the war in Ukraine has made the situation on the domestic market \u201cdifficult\u201d, according to the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA).<\/p>\n
