Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mayor of Maputo, Eneas Comiche, says that the geographical situation of the Mozambican capital means that it is exposed to seasonal changes, which makes it difficult to apply effective medium and long-term solutions in physical planning and land use management.<\/p>\n

He was speaking in Maputo, during the main ceremony marking World Environment Day, which was celebrated this Sunday, under the slogan \u201cOne Earth, for Climate Resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Comiche, the shortage of water alternates with seasons of abnormal rains that damage infrastructure in the city. Recent torrential rains have worsened erosion, created localized flooding including in residents\u2019 yards and homes, and compromised road traffic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe urban expansion taking place in our city has caused the clearing of extensive areas that were once flooded naturally, to make way for urbanization, rarely accompanied by the provision of adequate drainage systems\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Regarding the growth in housing, Comiche called for coordination between residents and the municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking into account the scenario of this territory, we want to take advantage of this special moment to state our commitment to environmental issues and strengthen our determination to take actions aimed at enhancing the beauty of our city\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the city also intends to ensure the recovery of urban green areas, as well as to enhance parks and gardens, restoring and protecting areas with ecological value that are currently degraded, such as mangroves and wetlands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are investing in innovative solutions that should be in line with the improvement of urban mobility. To this end, we will continue to conduct cleaning campaigns in neighbourhoods, beaches, markets, schools and public roads, accompanied by awareness-raising actions and promotion of good practices,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

The festivities in the city were marked by the delivery of DUAT (Land Use Titles), the planting of trees of various species, lectures on environmental education, and contests with prizes for the winners.<\/p>\n
