Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary of State for Nampula province hopes that the Nampula municipal assembly will be able to quickly consider and make a final decision on the claim for a tariff readjustment in the \u2018chapa\u2019 collective transport sector, Not\u00edcias reports.<\/p>\n

Addressing the stoppage of activity by the \u2018chapeiros\u2019, who want a rise in bus fares from 10 to 15 meticais, Metty Gondola says the government has been working with the municipal council and the operators, represented by the Association of Road Transporters of Nampula (ASTRA).<\/p>\n

Gondola stressed that any decision on the matter must safeguard the interests and expectations of carriers, but that the new fare must not be beyond the means of the population.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to work and monitor the evolution of the process, and a document has already been sent to the Municipal Assembly, which has the power to decide on the matter,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, with the \u2018chapas\u2019 on strike and no short term solution to hand, citizens continue to experience a lack of transport, often walking long distances to reach their jobs and other destinations.<\/p>\n

Transporters have put their collective foot down, claiming that they will not resume activity until their proposed tariff increase is accepted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the early hours of the yesterday morning, some \u2018chapeiros\u2019 dared to break the strike, transporting distressed citizens, but were stopped by organised groups of operators monitoring the situation and summarily hustled off the road with threats of a beating.<\/p>\n
