Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican health authorities on Wednesday reported 83 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, almost all of them from the southern provinces.<\/p>\n

This followed the diagnosis of 81 new cases on Tuesday: these are the highest numbers of new cases reported in a single 24 hour period since the 87 cases reported on 8 February.<\/p>\n

According to a Wednesday press release from the Ministry of Health, 48 of the new cases were women and 35 were men. Their ages varied from three to 78. 15 were children under the age of 15.<\/p>\n

39 of the new cases were from Maputo city, 24 from Maputo province and 14 from Gaza. These three southern provinces thus accounted for 92.8 per cent of the new cases. There were also two cases in Manica, two in Niassa, one in Cabo Delgado and one in Nampula.<\/p>\n

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,332,494 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 843 of them on Wednesday. 760 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 83 positive cases brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 226,148.<\/p>\n

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell slightly, from 10.05 per cent on Tuesday to 9.74 per cent on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Ministry reported one more death from Covid-19. He was a 50 year old man who died in Maputo province. This brought the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,206.<\/p>\n

No Covid-19 cases were discharged from hospital on Wednesday, but one new case was admitted, in Maputo province. Four people were under medical treatment in the Covid-19 wards, three in Maputo city and one in Niassa. None were in intensive care.<\/p>\n

75 people were declared on Wednesday to have made a full recovery from Covid-19, 52 in Maputo city and 23 in Maputo province. The total number of recoveries now stands at 223,614, which is 98.88 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 317 on Tuesday to 324 on Wednesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 134; Maputo province, 114; Gaza, 48; Cabo Delgado, 11; Inhambane, nine; and two each from Niassa, Nampula, Manica and Sofala. There were no active cases in Zambezia or Tete.<\/p>\n

The Ministry release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 4,942 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,301,466, which is 94 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.<\/p>\n
