Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The personal envoy to Mozambique of the secretary-general of the United Nations told Lusa on Thursday that the election of the country as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is \u201ca historic moment\u201d for a country whose own peace process after a long civil war can serve as an example to others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a historic opportunity for Mozambique to have a very important role and speak for the African continent in the Security Council,\u201d said Mirko Manzoni in an interview with Lusa, on the day Mozambique is seen joining the council \u2013 the UN\u2019s main decision-making body \u2013 as a non-permanent member.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe support that the African continent shows illustrates the confidence in Mozambique to bring peace and stability to the continent,\u201d Manzoni said. \u201cThe presence in the Security Council will allow to show the implementation of the peace process and provide experiences and lessons for the other countries that seek to ensure peace around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe peace process is a positive example of peace implementation,\u201d he went on. \u201cOne can thus speak of a Mozambican model to implement peace and strengthen security in the country and in the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Manzoni, Mozambique\u2019s elevation to the UN Security Council \u201cis a revealing and very clear sign of the consolidation of peace and the democratic process in the country, and of the effort to include all parts of Mozambican society in this process of democratization of peace [and] a true sign of the effort that Mozambique and the Mozambicans are making to build a peaceful and democratic society.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also stressed the personal efforts made by the UN secretary-general, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres \u2013 a former prime minister of Portugal \u2013 in helping build peace in the Portuguese-language country.<\/p>\n

The peace process in Mozambique, Manzoni continued, \u201cis a model that should be shared not only with African partners, but also in the rest of the world, because nowhere else is there a peace-building process as successful as this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the importance of non-permanent membership of the Security Council for the country\u2019s visibility in the international community, Manzoni replied that it \u201cis a key instrument for the promotion of foreign policy interests, to promote peace and stability, which are fundamental for the prosperity and development of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vote was scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. New York time, with Mozambique sure of backing from all African countries, which, according to Manzoni, \u201cwill give Mozambique a platform to join other African countries that have been pushing for reform of the United Nations to accommodate the unique interests of the African continent, but which are in the interest of the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mozambique is vying to replace Kenya for the vacancy of the African representative for non-permanent membership of the council.<\/p>\n

Five UN member states \u2013 Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland \u2013 are up for the five available seats. Mozambique and Switzerland are among the 62 UN member states \u2013 31.9% of the total \u2013 that have never had a seat on the Security Council.<\/p>\n
