Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The volume of cargo handled at the Port of Beira fell 5% from March to the beginning of June, compared to the same period in the last two years. The decrease is being attributed mainly to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

According to the newspaper \u2018O Pa\u00eds\u2019, the Port of Beira last year handled a record 278,000 containers, compared to 255,000 in 2020. Also, in 2021, the general cargo terminal handled 3.3 million tons, against 3.1 million tons registered in 2020.<\/p>\n

In view of these constraints, the administrator of Cornelder de Mo\u00e7ambique, the Port of Beira operator, said that new cargo handling equipment and a computer system called C-Gate, an investment estimated at around US$10 million, would inject new dynamism into the handling of cargo at the important port, which serves the hinterland countries, among others.<\/p>\n

Regarding the C-Gate computer system, the official said that it uses artificial intelligence and is able to automate the access of trucks to the port in real time.<\/p>\n

The new equipment went into operation on Friday, June 10, at a ceremony led by the Minister of Transport and Communications.<\/p>\n
