Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Celso Correia, says that, despite the shortage of wheat for the production of bread on the international market as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Mozambique has sufficient quantities to cover its needs until the end of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Industry and Commerce is monitoring the situation, and we believe that we have enough wheat for this year without any problem. Next year, we will have to remain vigilant, always working with the private sector, since we do not produce this raw material [ourselves],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview last week on Radio Mozambique\u2019s \u2018Cartas na Mesa\u2019 programme, Minister Correia explained that prices on the international market of rice, wheat and cooking oil \u2013 products which weigh considerably in the family budget \u2013 had also risen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe price of cooking oil, for example, went from US$800 to US$1,800 per ton. So this crisis has to be evaluated and monitored on several dimensions, the first being on supply, that is, whether or not there is sufficient stock at the national level,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

The minister also noted that the increase in the cost of these products domestically was partially the result of global inflation, something that Mozambique could not avoid, despite strong pressure on the country\u2019s trade balance and international net reserves.<\/p>\n
