Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Portugal\u2019s government has congratulated the election of the five new non-permanent member states of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the 2023-2024 biennium, highlighting the presence of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cPortugal congratulates the five new non-permanent members of the Security Council \u2013 Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland \u2013 for the 2023-2024 biennium, recognising the importance of the presence of a Portuguese-speaking country in this important UN body,\u201d the Portuguese foreign ministry wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n

The UN Security Council comprises 15 members, five permanent and 10 non-permanent.<\/p>\n

The election took place today at the UN headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the Mozambican minister of foreign affairs and cooperation expressed confidence in his country\u2019s election to the UN Security Council, saying that the experience in the fight against terrorism would be an \u201cadvantage\u201d in its favour.<\/p>\n

The five member states \u2013 Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland \u2013 competed for the five available seats. Mozambique and Switzerland were among 62 UN member states \u2013 31.9% of the total membership \u2013 that have never served on the Council.<\/p>\n

Mozambique ran for the only seat available to the African group.<\/p>\n

Ver\u00f3nica Macamo said that in her country\u2019s favour was its experience fighting terrorism, particularly in Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n
