Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Shopping in inappropriate places in Maputo city may be penalised under a review of the municipal ordinance [postura municipal] on informal sales.<\/p>\n

This is a measure that complements the various actions carried out by the Maputo Municipal Council aimed at combating retailing in inappropriate places, a fight which to date has proven unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

Dan\u00fabio Lado, councillor for Local Economic Development, said, at the second session of the Municipal Observatory, that the revision of the ordinance considers incorporating penalties on customers who shop in inappropriate places.<\/p>\n

Consultation of stakeholders is in progress, to be followed by a public debate prior to the harmonising, appraisal and approval of a final proposal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe interact with some sellers\u2019 associations, and we think that this measure could encourage customers to shop in the markets, attracting merchants there,\u201d Laido said.<\/p>\n

He added that the city council is studying the feasibility of designating some sidewalks in the downtown area as fit for informal commerce, identifying some streets as capable of supporting such activity without disturbing vehicular traffic or other activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe temporary solution that we have achieved is that of thematic fairs, organised with the aim of giving informal sellers the opportunity to display their products in an orderly fashion. But we are also working with several organic entities to move these exhibitions to the pedestrian paths,\u201d Councillor Lado explained.<\/p>\n
