Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The government of the district of Gil\u00e9 in Zamb\u00e9zia is concerned about the massive number of national and foreign citizens involved in mining in that part of the province, especially in Muiane, R\u00e1dio Mo\u00e7ambique reports.<\/p>\n

The sentiment was expressed by the district administrator, Mariano Maquinze, in an interview with Radio Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Last week, unknown individuals tried to murder the head of the village of Muiane [chefe de localidade] using a firearm, allegedly in protest against the transfer of a local market.<\/p>\n

Mariano Maquinze believes that the incident may be associated with the presence of foreigners of various nationalities in Muiane.<\/p>\n

About a week after the partial vandalization of the residence of the Muiane village head, local authorities say that there are still no clues as to the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

On June 7, Diario da Zamb\u00e9zia published a report on the events mentioned above which read as follows.<\/p>\n

\u201cArmed men, in an unspecified number, fired shots at the residence of the Chief of the Locality of Muiane, district of Gil\u00e9, north of Zamb\u00e9zia.<\/p>\n

The incident took place on Saturday night, Di\u00e1rio da Zamb\u00e9zia learned from the victim. In addition to shooting, the criminals splashed the residence with fuel and set fire to the windows in order to burn the house down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith little room for manoeuvre, the chefe de localidade tried to call for help, but the police took a long time to arrive and he was only saved by people nearby who rushed to the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the criminals became aware of the presence of the population, they fled, abandoning a pistol-type weapon. Asked about the possible motivations, the local chief said he did not understand, but gave chilling reports of what had happened in the days prior,\u201d the item read.<\/p>\n
