Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Transgender and non-binary footballers in Germany will be allowed to choose if they play in men\u2019s or women\u2019s teams.<\/p>\n

The German football association (DFB) has announced the ruling for amateur and junior football, as well as futsal.<\/p>\n

Previously, it was the gender specified in a person\u2019s identification documents that determined their eligibility to play for a men\u2019s or a women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

But since 2018, Germans have had options of \u2018diverse\u2019 and \u2018no reference\u2019 in the gender section of ID documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs it is possible since 2018 for people to register in the civil registry as \u2018diverse\u2019, there has been a rise in the number of people with that status,\u201d the DFB said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis also affects people who play football which made the need for clear rules more important.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ruling does not cover professional football in Germany, for example the Bundesliga.<\/p>\n

England\u2019s FA states that under-18s may play in a mixed team, or a girls\u2019 or boys\u2019 team, regardless of their birth sex, but transgender players who are 18 and over have to apply for approval to play in their affirmed gender.<\/p>\n

Critics of transgender athletes\u2019 participation in women\u2019s sports say they retain a disproportionate advantage to their peers. However, transgender athletes and their supporters argue for inclusion and say measures, such as reducing testosterone, help to level the playing field.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, FA chairwoman Debbie Hewitt said the debate over the inclusion of transgender athletes in women\u2019s sport is \u201ca really tricky subject\u201d.<\/p>\n

The DFB\u2019s ruling comes in the same week that swimming\u2019s world governing body Fina voted to stop transgender athletes from competing in women\u2019s elite races if they have gone through any part of the process of male puberty.<\/p>\n

Last week, the UCI \u2014 cycling\u2019s world governing body \u2014 toughened its rules, doubling the period of time before a rider transitioning from male to female can compete in women\u2019s races.<\/p>\n
