Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Reoccupied a few months ago by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) as part of what appears to be a counter-offensive towards the district headquarters town of Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, the position of the government forces in the administrative post of Diaca was the target of an attack by jihadist groups described as \u201cserious\u201d last Friday (2 July).<\/p>\n

Descriptions indicate that the attackers were transported to Diaca in four vehicles and in considerable numbers, but given what is described as the \u201cpreparedness and readiness\u201d of the government forces\u2019 position, little damage was caused to the barracks.<\/p>\n

There are also rumours that the FDS had previously received prior warning of the attack, enabling preventative measures to be taken. Whatever the case, the FDS reacted and held their positions.<\/p>\n

At least one member of the Defence and Security Forces is however reported to have lost his life as a result of the \u201cintense\u201d confrontation with the attackers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe insurgents retreated due to the readiness of the FDS,\u201d a source close to the operations relates, noting that, in offensives and counter-offensives where the civilian population is absent, the chances of government forces prevailing are greater.<\/p>\n

Diaca, one of the three administrative posts in Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, is identified as a strategic region in the approach towards the district headquarters.<\/p>\n

Evidence based on reports of former hostages continues to show that the Moc\u00edmboa da Praia headquarters town remains under the almost total control of the armed gangs.<\/p>\n

The importance of Diaca\u2019s position within the scope of retaking Moc\u00edmboa da Praia is the reason behind the determination to maintain it.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the area was used for training and indoctrination. Bases and sub-bases were set up, and the expulsion of terrorists was possible using new war material acquired by the Mozambican government, particularly Gazelle SA-341 attack helicopters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
