Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Bread has gone up two meticais per loaf in the city of Tete [whether weighing 50, 70 or 80 grams]. The new prices are in effect since last weekend, O Pa\u00eds reports.<\/p>\n

While consumers complain about the rise, sellers are considering abandoning the business.<\/p>\n

Consumers say that, at that price, they might just not buy bread at all. \u201cIt\u2019s a hit to the pockets of Mozambicans. I used to buy 65 meticais\u2019 worth of bread every day, but now it costs an extra 10 meticais,\u201d says Tete resident Adosinda Nhantumbo.<\/p>\n

Consumers also question how it is that the price of bread has increased from five to seven meticais while the quality remains the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the rise in the cost of bread, we expected that the quality of production would also improve significantly, but this is not what we see at the bakeries, so we\u2019re asking for supervision by the authorities, with a view to changing this scenario,\u201d a consumer who wished to remain anonymous said.<\/p>\n

Others also feeling the rise in the price of bread keenly are the retailers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe buy a box for 300 meticais, which means that, for us resellers, a loaf of bread costs six meticais. The consumer will buy it for seven and we earn only one metical. The situation is increasingly stressful, and I\u2019m thinking of giving up the business if the scenario prevails for a long time,\u201d says L\u00facia Jo\u00e3o, a retailer in Tete\u2019s Francisco Manyanga neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

\u2018O Pa\u00eds\u2019 tried to contact the president of the Mozambican Association of Bakers by telephone to discuss the price of bread in Tete, but, by early this Tuesday night, he was still unreachable.<\/p>\n
