Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A three-storey carpark is being built in downtown Maputo to meet the demand for parking and allow the expansion of the historical \u2018Mercado Central\u2019.<\/p>\n

The infrastructure, with parking for 440 vehicles, will sit next to the Maputo Central Market on the corner between 25 de Setembro, Filipe Samuel Magaia and Zedequias Manganhela avenues [where a carpark which has now been shut down was operating for several years].<\/p>\n

The president of the Municipal Council of Maputo (CMM) Eneas Comiche yesterday laid the first stone to inaugurate the project, which is estimated to cost 420 million meticais [around US$6.5 at current exchange rates].<\/p>\n

The funds come from revenues collected by the Municipal Mobility and Parking Company (EMME).<\/p>\n

Completion of the infrastructure is scheduled for the first half of next year.<\/p>\n

Comiche said on Thursday that the city council planned to have a total of four multi-story carparks (\u2018silos\u2019) by the end of next year,<\/p>\n

Besides the one whose construction was launched yesterday, Maputo will, by 2024, have \u201ctwo silos in the Maxaquene landfill area and the fourth in the area adjacent to the Prime Minister\u2019s Office\u201d, Comiche revealed.<\/p>\n

The silo under construction in Baixa will, on the ground floor, include an extension of the Central Market, with 330 new stalls and public toilets. There will also be a space reserved for disabled parking, while the other two floors will provide parking for another 440 vehicles.<\/p>\n

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of EMME, Jo\u00e3o Ruas, said that the extension of the Central Market would accommodate informal traders, allowing them to ply their trade in a more regular fashion.<\/p>\n

Ruas believes that the investment will remove vehicles parked irregularly on the streets and sidewalks to a controlled and safe environment, thus facilitating mobility on public roads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost for the services will be 80 meticais per day or 4,000 meticais per month. Payment can be made via M-Pesa, Mkesh, credit\/debit card, POS and cash payment at the company\u2019s headquarters,\u201d he detailed.<\/p>\n
