Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, held a telephone conversation lasting more than 30 minutes yesterday with his counterpart from the Republic of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.<\/p>\n

A press release received by \u2018Not\u00edcias\u2019 states that the telephone call served for the President of Ukraine to inform the Mozambican head of state about the situation caused by the Russian military intervention in that country.<\/p>\n

President Zelensky also congratulated Mozambique on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and expressed interest in explaining the security situation to African countries, in an appropriate forum, and using the opportunity to discuss its economic and commercial aspects.<\/p>\n

In turn, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, thanked President Zelensky for the detailed information he provided. He sympathised and expressed solidarity over the loss of more than 10,000 human lives, the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of more than 12 million people.<\/p>\n

President Nyusi explained Mozambique\u2019s abstention in relation to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as resulting from the Republic\u2019s constitution and foreign policy, which defend the solution of disputes through dialogue.<\/p>\n

He also explained that Mozambique advocates respect for international humanitarian law, human rights and protection of victims of war and armed conflict.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic thanked Ukraine for having expressed its confidence in Mozambique by voting for it to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and gave assurances of its commitment to work responsibly for peace and security in the world.<\/p>\n

He saluted Ukraine\u2019s initiative in speaking to African countries about the prevailing situation and addressing its economic ramifications for the continent.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican head of state reiterated his encouragement to Ukraine and Russia to return to direct dialogue and, with humility, to seek a solution other than war.<\/p>\n

The two heads of state expressed pleasure at having been in contact, which they had both found promising, and President Nyusi reiterated Mozambique\u2019s willingness to do everything in its power to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The two leaders also undertook to hold consultations and mutually support each other in the exercise of their functions and in the search for international security.<\/p>\n
