Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ,the UN Refugee Agency, has warned in a statement about the gravity of the latest attacks in Cabo Delgado, where violence has displaced 36,000 residents from districts hitherto considered safe.<\/p>\n

It notes that one of the most recent attacks \u201coccurred 35 kilometres from Pemba\u201d, the provincial capital and one of the main refuges for thousands of displaced people. The city has an airport that connects it to the rest of the world, allowing it to act as a base for humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

\u201cUNHCR is especially concerned about the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable among the displaced, including women and children,\u201d the document made public this Thursday (07-07) stresses, adding that the attacks took place near roads \u201cregularly used by humanitarian organisations, including UNHCR, for missions to Ancuabe, Chi\u00fare and Montepuez\u201d.<\/p>\n

Around 36,000 people have already been displaced by the June attacks in Cabo Delgado. and an unconfirmed number of people have been killed, \u201cincluding some by decapitation\u201d. In addition, houses have been burned and goods looted, \u201ccreating panic in Ancuabe and neighbouring districts\u201d.<\/p>\n

The newly displaced \u201cneed life-saving assistance, including access to food, shelter and basic services\u201d that continue to be lacking.<\/p>\n

Transport rates \u201chave increased significantly due to increasing demand\u201d and most people \u201ccontinue to travel on foot and are exposed to [associated] risks\u201d, particularly young women.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the volatile security situation\u201d, the UNHCR considers it \u201cpremature\u201d to promote the return of the population to the affected districts, as state authorities have done.<\/p>\n

\u201cUNHCR highlights the importance of ensuring that returns are safe, voluntary and based on informed decisions and that basic services are re-established in areas of origin,\u201d the statement concludes.<\/p>\n
