Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday sent a message of condolences to his Angolan counterpart on the death of that country\u2019s former head of state, Jos\u00e9 Eduardo dos Santos.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe death of President Jos\u00e9 Eduardo dos Santos is a great loss, not only for Angola, but also for the region and for everyone,\u201d the message reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will always be remembered as an icon of the struggle for Angola\u2019s economic independence, a peacemaker and regional integration of the SADC countries, of which he was one of the founders. His legacy will forever be registered in an indelible way in the annals of the history of Angola and Africa,\u201d said Nyusi.<\/p>\n

A figure worthy of \u201cadmiration\u201d and a \u201cvisionary leader\u201d, the former Angolan president achieved feats that remain in the Mozambican collective memory, President Nyusi\u2019s message concluded.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Eduardo dos Santos died on Friday at the age of 79 after two weeks in intensive care at a clinic in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

The former president had health problems for several years.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Eduardo dos Santos succeeded Agostinho Neto as president of Angola in 1979 and left office in 2017, having served one of the longest presidencies in the world. He was regularly accused of corruption and nepotism by international organisations.<\/p>\n

He did not stand for re-election in 2017, and the current president, Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, succeeded him in office, also as the head of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has governed the country since independence from Portugal in 1975.<\/p>\n
