Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) announced today the reinforcement of ostensible patrols in the face of the circulation of anonymous messages calling for a national demonstration in protest against the high cost of living in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Police of the Republic of Mozambique are on alert and in operational readiness, having reinforced surveillance and ostensible patrols throughout the national territory, with greater incidence in urban centers, main roads and bus terminals\u201d, said the spokesman for the General Command of the Republic of Mozambique. PRM, Orlando Mudumane, at a press conference in Maputo.<\/p>\n

At issue is the circulation of anonymous messages on social networks calling for a demonstration across the country for Thursday, in protest against the high cost of living in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The spokesman for the general command of the PRM says that the authorities did not identify the author of the messages, considering that this fact may cause \u201cacts of violence, vandalism and generalized public disorder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe PRM will continue to exercise due authority, taking, whenever necessary, all coercive, proportionate and legally justifiable police measures throughout the national territory\u201d, said Orlando Mudumane.<\/p>\n

The messages, which began to circulate at the beginning of the week, are generating some tension among the people in the Mozambican capital, with some institutions, from day care centers to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), cancelling activities for fear of the alleged demonstration.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued today, the Mozambican Workers\u2019 Organization, which recently threatened to promote a demonstration across the country in protest against the high cost of living, appealed for calm in the face of the messages in circulation, asking that the Mozambican workforce not get involved in situations of violence and that follows the guidelines of the trade union central.<\/p>\n

In 2008 and 2010, the increase in the price of road transport, accompanied by the increase in the cost of essential goods and services, led to popular uprisings in some of the country\u2019s main cities, resulting in clashes with the police and destruction in some places.<\/p>\n
