Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique will lead the Observation Mission of the Electoral Commissions Forum of Southern African Countries (ECF-SADC) in Angola\u2019s general elections, scheduled for 24 August, spokesman for the National Elections Commission (CNE) Paulo Cuinica has announced in Maputo.<\/p>\n

The appointment of Mozambique for this mission, he said, was the result of rotation among regional members.<\/p>\n

President of Mozambique\u2019s National Elections Commission, Reverend Carlos Matsinhe, was in Angola on an exploratory mission since last last week\u2019s Monday, checking that conditions on the ground exist for the elections to be held.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mission will then make recommendations to the peers to say whether there is a favourable environment in Angola and whether ECF-SADC can send observers to this scrutiny,\u201d Cuinica said.<\/p>\n

Conditioning factors include the political situation and technical issues related to the preparation of Angola\u2019s National Commission for Elections, a body that is also a member of the regional forum.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time that Mozambique has led election observation missions in other countries \u2013 one reason why the CNE believes that its experience can be fundamental for successful leadership of the ECF-SADC observer mission.<\/p>\n

The National Elections Commission team currently in Angola includes, in addition to the president, member Salom\u00e3o Moyana and a STAE technician, joined by two other technicians from the body\u2019s secretariat in Gaborone, capital of Botswana.<\/p>\n

The Constitutional Council of Angola has approved candidates from eight political parties for the 24 August elections. They will compete for the votes of the more than 14 million citizens eligible, including those living abroad.<\/p>\n

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the ruling party, headed by the current president, Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, hopes to renew its mandate.<\/p>\n
