Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the National Elections Commission (CNE), Reverend Carlos Matsinhe, says that the CNE is working with the government to find ways to fill the deficit in the nine billion meticais budget for next year\u2019s local elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year we need three billion meticais, and next year we\u2019ll need a further six [billion],\u201d Bishop Matsinhe says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe National Elections Commission is working together with the government to find a solution to the budget deficit. There are also efforts to make contact with partners,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Without sufficient funding, preparatory activities such as the installation of electoral bodies at provincial and district levels, the beginning of voter registration and electoral civic education may be compromised.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that if the government sets a date for voter registration, it means that it is committed to providing funds so that we can carry it out,\u201d the head of the CNE reasons.<\/p>\n

Other CNE concerns are risks associated with the effects of climate change and the occurrence of conflicts.<\/p>\n

The upcoming local elections will be held on October 11, 2023.<\/p>\n
