Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Maputo Fish Market on Costa do Sol beach was at a stand-still this morning as vendors came out onto the street in protest. They say that the compensation promised by the municipal authorities when they were removed from the old fish market in the \u2018Maritimo\u2019 area has not been handed over.<\/p>\n

Vendors say that the municipality\u2019s promises included monetary compensation, and that they are now astonished to see buildings being erected on the site of the old market without any compensation being forthcoming.<\/p>\n

Protesters shut down their business, displaying posters and singing songs demanding the fulfilment of the promises supposedly made by the municipality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want compensation for the sale of the old [fish] market and the house on the site, because we are the legitimate owners of the stalls in the old market,\u201d Not\u00edcias cites one unidentified vendor as saying.<\/p>\n

Not\u00edcias online reported earlier this morning that \u201cthe sellers and the authorities are negotiating a meeting in the old fish market\u201d.<\/p>\n

The complaints also concern the fees they pay at the new Fish Market, which the protesters consider unsustainable. According to their calculations, vendors pay more than 7,000 meticais per month, not all of which is receipted.<\/p>\n

The demonstration caused slow-moving vehicles to back up along the Chihango-Costa do Sol section of Avenida Marginal, Not\u00edcias adds.<\/p>\n
