Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic said yesterday in Moatize, Tete province, that women should be given priority in the granting of Land Use and Benefit Rights titles (DUATs) within the scope of the implementation of the \u2018Terra Segura\u2019 programme.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi was speaking at the delivery of DUATs to residents of the Cateme resettlement area in Kambulatsitsi, administrative post, who were relocated there from the Moatize coal mining area.<\/p>\n

The head of state said that, under the programme, around 750,000 plots of land were registered and regularised in their favour, demonstrating the government\u2019s commitment to gender equity and women\u2019s rights to access land.<\/p>\n

He took the opportunity to appeal for more women, particularly in rural areas, to present themselves for the registration of their land parcels.<\/p>\n

The president further pointed out that, with the 2,000 DUATs delivered yesterday to the population in Moatize, Tete province had 23,629 citizens with their land assets fully regularised.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is common knowledge that around 68 percent of the Mozambican population live in rural areas and depend on the use of the land for their livelihood, with emphasis on women who produce subsistence food and cash crops,\u201d the president noted.<\/p>\n

The Terra Segura [\u2018Safe Land\u2019] programme aims to prevent any Mozambican not having secure land tenure by reason of illiteracy, poverty, gender or place of origin, he explained.<\/p>\n

The programme, he said, intended to make the administration and management of land and its rights of use and exploitation more efficient, effective and equitable, in order to guarantee access to, and the exercise and maintenance of land rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know how important secure land tenure is, particularly for the most disadvantaged citizens, especially women. Most Mozambicans have land as their most important resource because it guarantees their survival, their housing, in addition to representing their sociocultural identity, particularly at a time when our society is experiencing many moments of transformation,\u201d said the President of the Republic, making mention also of the market economy, generational, technological and cultural transitions, rapid urbanisation, population growth and new investments, including in the domain of land.<\/p>\n

Since the launch of the Terra Segura program in 2015, more than 1,5 million land plots have been registered and regularised, of which 712,143 have been delivered across the country. In the same period, 22,140 DUATs were awarded to applicants outside the Terra Segura program. The government programme aims to deliver two million DUATs in the 2020-2024 five-year period.<\/p>\n
