Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary of State for Maputo province has ordered the destruction of farming plots (machambas) used for the clandestine cultivation of cannabis sativa, commonly known as \u2018soruma\u2019, in the district of Matutu\u00edne.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Vict\u00f3ria Diogo urged local authorities to take urgent measures to stop this practice, demanding a coordinated effort between local leadership and the police.<\/p>\n

Diogo was speaking at the Katembe N\u2019sime administrative post consultative council during a working visit to Matutu\u00edne district.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are soruma machambas here in Matutu\u00edne district, which is forbidden. I want our community leaders to be vigilant and report them, and when they do so, the police have to maintain confidentiality, because often people give tip-offs and then the police say who it was, and then you get problems of retaliation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Diogo also voiced concern over excessive alcohol consumption.\u201d We have to fight alcoholism because our youth is broken, and drinks too much. We have to sensitise young people, in the schools and in communities, not to drink or use drugs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Drug use on school premises has increased recently, following the circulation of various narcotics, including cannabis, in the city and province of Maputo.<\/p>\n

Police recently seized 15 kilograms of \u2018soruma\u2019 in the city of Matola\u2019s Liberdade neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
