Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s president, Filipe Nyusi, is heading the regional conference on the management of miombo woodlands ecosystems in Maputo on Friday, a meeting that will be attended by his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and other members of regional governments.<\/p>\n

According to Wikipedia, the Miombo woodland is a tropical and subtropical grassland, savannas, and shrublands biome located primarily in Central Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the session, the Maputo Declaration will be adopted, which will express the governments\u2019 will to ensure transparent, inclusive and responsible management of the miombo forest in the southern African region to optimise its contribution to the management of the Zambezi valley basin,\u201d said a note from the presidency of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

As well as the two heads of state, the meeting in the Mozambican capital will be attended by the executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Elias Magosi, as well as ministers of the Environment, Natural Resources and Forestry sectors from Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Republic of Congo and South Africa.<\/p>\n

The conference, which kicked off on Thursday, aims to discuss the current conditions of miombo woodlands in the region and define joint strategies for their protection.<\/p>\n

The aim of the meeting focuses on biodiversity conservation and mitigation of the impact of climate change on miombo woodland ecosystems by increasing the capacity to manage natural resources and introducing innovative methods among the region\u2019s countries.<\/p>\n

The meeting, which is also being held in virtual format, also includes members of the governments of Namibia, Malawi and Tanzania, as well as academics and civil society organisations.<\/p>\n
