Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Defence and Security Council (CNDS) has asked to strengthen inspection measures and to hold offenders accountable, given the \u201chigh rate of road accidents\u201d in the country, according to a statement from the Mozambican presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe body urged the appropriate institutions to strengthen surveillance measures, as well as to hold offenders accountable for violating the Highway Code and other legal instruments,\u201d said the statement from the Presidency, following a meeting of the body on Wednesday in Maputo.<\/p>\n

The National Council for Defence and Security expressed concern about the high rate of road accidents that occur in the country, considering that the situations have \u201ccaused grief among Mozambican families and caused significant material damage.<\/p>\n

Road accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by several organisations.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican authorities announced on Friday that they will immediately arrest drivers involved in accidents that cause fatalities, as part of measures adopted to curb the high accident rates in the country.<\/p>\n

According to the government, the measures also include a review of speed limits and road signs, mainly at critical points.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican authorities have pointed to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol as the main causes of accidents.<\/p>\n

On average, at least 1,000 people die on the roads each year, according to figures provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Safety (Amviro)<\/p>\n
