Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Southern African leaders on Friday signed the Maputo Declaration for the protection and conservation of miombo biome woodland ecosystems in the region, an instrument that will promote \u201cjoint and integrated actions for the recovery and management\u201d of the resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe declaration promotes joint, coordinated and integrated actions for the recovery, management, monitoring and conservation of miombo forests and other forest formations throughout the Southern African Development Community [SADC] region,\u201d said Filipe Nyusi, president of Mozambique<\/p>\n

The Mozambican head of state was speaking in Maputo during the regional conference on the management of miombo biome forest ecosystems, which was attended by his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and other members of regional governments.<\/p>\n

According to the Mozambican president, forest conservation is of \u201ccollective interest, for the good of the people and the planet,\u201d considering that \u201cclimate change does not respect borders,\u201d and for that reason, it is important to regulate the exploitation of resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we want to transform our relationship with nature, we have to do it together,\u201d he said, noting that the signing of the Maputo Declaration was a historic milestone in consolidating regional commitments for the conservation of the miombo and greater Zambezi forests.<\/p>\n

For the Mozambican head of state, the promotion of good practices of sustainable forest management will allow the \u201csharing of benefits among millions of people\u201d of the present and future generations.<\/p>\n

According to Nyusi, the miombo forest covers 82 percent of Mozambique\u2019s total land area.<\/p>\n

The conference, which began on Thursday, aimed to discuss the current conditions of miombo forests in the region, defining joint strategies for their protection.<\/p>\n

The aim of the meeting focused on conserving biodiversity and mitigating the impact of climate change on miombo forest ecosystems, by increasing the capacity to manage natural resources and introduce innovative methods among the countries of the region.<\/p>\n
