Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Chamanculo \u201cC\u201d neighbourhood is being upgraded. Alleyways are disappearing and, in their place, streets are opening up.<\/p>\n

Costing 1.9 million meticais, the redevelopment of Chamanculo \u201cC\u201d is part of the City of Maputo\u2019s urban requalification plan.<\/p>\n

Under the implementation of the project, the neighbourhood\u2019s characteristic 60 to 80- centimetre alleyways are being widened to three metres.<\/p>\n

Residents say they are satisfied with the widening of the alleyways, which were inconvenient.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe [old] streets were so tight people could barely walk down them. Now, even cars can come in, and we are relieved because ambulances can pick people from their homes when they\u2019re ill,\u201d said Miguel Chirindza, a Chamanculo \u201cC\u201d resident of over 30 years.<\/p>\n

In addition to broadening streets, requalification covers improvements in sanitation and the water and electricity supply systems.<\/p>\n

Fence walls have been constructed for the families affected. Speaking on behalf of one such, Avelina Muthemba said: \u201cMy old bathroom was demolished, but now there is a new, improved one.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea of reorganising neighbourhoods in the country\u2019s capital is not new, but there are still some who see no advantage, and have refused to give up part of their plots.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is one citizen whose plot occupies land where a street that would improve access for all block\u2019s residents would pass,\u201d the Councillor for Territorial Planning, Environment and Urbanization says, but he declined to cooperate.<\/p>\n

In addition to Chamanculo \u201cC\u201d, the project will cover another 20 Maputo neighbourhoods, at a cost of US$100 million.<\/p>\n
